Established in 1881, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad was founded for hauling precious metals out of the mountains to Durango. This coal-fed locomotive still runs deep into the mountains as a scenic Railroad. It has been featured in many movies such as “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid“.
On a plein-air painting trip one year, I saw this dramatic view and have wanted to capture it ever since. This view could have been painted in 1881, or 2016, and it would look exactly the same.
